{"id":15889,"date":"2025-10-31T00:54:21","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T13:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/?p=15889"},"modified":"2025-10-31T00:57:41","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T13:57:41","slug":"credulity-for-tales-of-the-astonishing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/31\/credulity-for-tales-of-the-astonishing\/","title":{"rendered":"Credulity for tales of the astonishing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember the time when claiming to have been abducted by aliens was all the rage among the hillbillies, crackpots and anyone desperately trying to explain away a suspicious bum injury?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But stereotyped scrawny moonshiners can be forgiven for believing stories of alien abductions, those typically perpetuated in the cloak of night. In 1969, before becoming president of the United States, Jimmy Carter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oklahoma_City\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a report\u00a0<\/span>with the International UFO Bureau in Oklahoma City of what he took to be a UFO.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t until 2016, when an Atlanta woman called a local TV station to report the same UFO had landed in a tree at the end of her street, that a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2023\/11\/17\/us-presidents-ufo-obsession-00127519\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researcher finally solved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Carter\u2019s sighting and proved him half-right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A former Air Force scientist, Jere Justus, read Carter\u2019s description and knew almost instantly what the he had seen \u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a high-altitude rocket-released Barium cloud to study winds in the upper atmosphere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carter, not known for his temperament when it came to denouncing credulous ideals told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/jimmy-carter-final-interview-reflected-on-habitat-for-humanity-marriage-rosalynn-5873027\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>People <\/em>magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019: \u201cIt makes total sense now. It was a chemical haze.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While credulity among the public for tales of the astonishing \u2013 including for example religious and spiritual beliefs \u2013 is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uzh.ch\/en\/articles\/media\/2024\/Misinformation.html#:~:text=Interventions%20against%20Misinformation%20also%20Increase%20Skepticism%20toward%20Reliable%20Sources%20%7C%20%7C%20UZH\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">correlated with growing scepticism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we have witnessed the growth of a new culture, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journal.media-culture.org.au\/index.php\/mcjournal\/article\/view\/3135#:~:text=At%20the%20heart%20of%20capturing,to%20be%20seen%20by%20others.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visual consumer culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with all its worship of constant convenience, desperately fawning customer service\u00a0and instant gratification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scepticism in various aspects of life, including consumer trust in brands, climate change perceptions, and even science in general, is on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S004016252400461X#:~:text=An%20affective%20responses%20identifies%20the,or%20avoiding%20certain%20brands%20altogether.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But scepticism alone is a convenient short-hand for a deeper, psycho-social, historical and cultural phenomenon spanning the past 75 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UFO spectacle sits alongside the manifestation of a hallow yet distinctly visual consumer culture acquiring the dimensions of an alternative reality and reflecting the breakdown of the distinction between what was once \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the visible and the invisible, the material and the spiritual, the irreverent and the sacred, the phenomenal and the noumenal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/study.com\/learn\/lesson\/cultural-assimilation-extinction-processes-purposes-examples.html#:~:text=Cultural%20assimilation%20requires%20adopting%20a,that%20of%20the%20Texas%20State.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">culture replaced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the dull, grey world with its own phantasmatic iridescence. It didn\u2019t matter whether people could genuinely buy a part of the universal plenty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What mattered was the mythology \u2013 the illusion of bountiful possibility and limitless choice, wrapped up in a spectacularity borrowed from the celebrity industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When German social theorists and intellectuals associated with the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=005b6c4fc39c80c5&amp;rlz=1C1CHZN_enAU1124AU1124&amp;cs=0&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifMwdgibUBUkz3sQT3vkWhhe7YPF-w%3A1751432012432&amp;q=Institute+for+Social+Research&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwifwqvXsJ2OAxWhXmwGHaV6HKIQxccNegQIBBAB&amp;mstk=AUtExfC9ILXd3uCddtBIiVzWePbzpRJUOm9ONmyKAhlIF6aAmN6E8a_OL53NA1byatWgkk1uoZV5TJZWmiTUcTi75euF-pEjbBh5wYdpawY68QQqiEWOTreOJPS1cY7p3ASA259OiuEWZ3_0poj-C8_rPtGDPFND0h01F2x-rjjGy0d-6krb4ZnEssb8HAHsU22cl055iuTiHE8sSIckbk9xeerYNb2LjndiFnBrEhuIhDcxQoOz_s6_Io5AH2KYnjEFc6hS1z67sUi1MA4tdGRr_WF_TkOcUbofWE3_HL1o2tcDXg&amp;csui=3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute for Social Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0at the University of Frankfurt arrived in New York during their wartime exile in the 1930s, they found giant billboard ads for toothpaste even more-nerve jangling than they had expected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here was a culture entirely mortgaged to the secular spectacular. In previous centuries, what was visually remarkable stood for the other-worldly, the spiritual.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Left behind were the baroque fa\u00e7ades, the soaring spires of cathedrals, the carmine and cobalt stained-glass windows, the devotional processions and carnival parades. These had all attested that there was an intangible reality beyond the physical one \u2013 a reality that could at most be suggestively delineated in extraordinary sights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impulse against the visual culture, however, is buoyed by the very fact that they can be seen and, importantly, bare traces of human artifice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where people were convinced that they had seen the other world \u2013 UFOs, bespoke almost manna from heaven \u2013 impinging on material reality, or were persuaded that others had, the connection between what one could see and what one might believe only grew deeper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Materialisations of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Our_Lady_of_Lourdes#:~:text=Our%20Lady%20of%20Lourdes%20(French,Patronage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blessed Virgin at Lourdes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in France in 1858, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=blessed+mother+knock+ireland&amp;sca_esv=c51dc7a248ac08c4&amp;rlz=1C1CHZN_enAU1124AU1124&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifPnJab-FGJsKDnyWu8IqLXZxjX4mA%3A1751600205137&amp;ei=TUxnaP-FCISYseMPoa6IMA&amp;oq=Blessed+Virgin+at+knock+&amp;gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiGEJsZXNzZWQgVmlyZ2luIGF0IGtub2NrICoCCAAyBhAAGBYYHjILEAAYgAQYhgMYigUyCxAAGIAEGIYDGIoFMgUQABjvBTIIEAAYgAQYogQyBRAAGO8FMggQABiABBiiBDIIEAAYgAQYogRIxDtQ_QNYiy5wAngAkAEAmAGKAqAB9RCqAQUwLjEuObgBAcgBAPgBAZgCCqACwQ7CAgoQABiwAxjWBBhHwgIEECMYJ8ICCBAAGKIEGIkFmAMAiAYBkAYIkgcFMi4wLjigB7k1sgcDMi04uAemDsIHBTItMi44yAdn&amp;sclient=gws-wiz-serp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at Knock<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Ireland in 1879, and a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=blessed+mother+fatima&amp;sca_esv=c51dc7a248ac08c4&amp;rlz=1C1CHZN_enAU1124AU1124&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifOwYeN5nf6zEByrjaZ8z3AcxBrlEg%3A1751600302973&amp;ei=rkxnaJKVO9KjseMP5tPUgQs&amp;oq=blessed+mother+fatma&amp;gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiFGJsZXNzZWQgbW90aGVyIGZhdG1hKgIIADIGEAAYFhgeMggQABgIGA0YHjILEAAYgAQYhgMYigUyCxAAGIAEGIYDGIoFMgsQABiABBiGAxiKBTIFEAAY7wVI-TBQ8AVY4B1wAXgBkAEAmAHrAaAB-A6qAQUwLjMuNrgBAcgBAPgBAZgCCqAC5A_CAgoQABiwAxjWBBhHwgIEECMYJ8ICCBAAGIAEGKIEwgIHEAAYgAQYDcICBRAuGIAEwgILEAAYgAQYkQIYigXCAgUQABiABMICCBAAGBYYChgewgIHECEYoAEYCpgDAIgGAZAGCJIHBTEuMS44oAf1RLIHBTAuMS44uAfXD8IHBzAuMS4xLjjIB1s&amp;sclient=gws-wiz-serp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t F\u00e1tima<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Portugal in 1917 suggested that visions of the first Christians \u2013 those who not only saw but spoke to, ate with and touched their risen Lord \u2013 were still available for anyone with eyes to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What these countervailing powers have brought about in postmodern society is a different kind of scepticism. A large element of rationalist doubt, certainly, accompanies the decline of interest in the paranormal, driven primarily by these cultural and, latterly, technological factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, underlying that doubt itself is the incredulity with which people evaluate anything and everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supermarket discounts appear to offer wines at half-price; products for smearing on your face purport to make you look younger; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/55370-why-are-aliens-little-green-men.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">little green men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> piloting flying saucers from Mars. These are the all-too-evident mendacities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the way this stuff has permeated culture as a whole has bred a widespread incurious scepticism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We now extend the same degree of undifferentiating refusal even to those phenomena that, while hard to credit, deserve to be heeded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contemporary scepticism takes the role of playing along with the clamour because there seems to be no alternative, while privately knowing that it can\u2019t deliver what it promises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this cast of mind, somebody\u2019s hyperventilating tale of a translucent glow seen drifting high in the night sky, or the disembodied footsteps that clatter up and down the stairs when everybody is tucked up in bed, are neither more nor less believable than the weather forecast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dignity of spooky stories was that, unlike obvious tissues of lies, they occasionally managed to cross the divide between the highly unlikely and the just-barely credible. If they could never be proved, neither could they ever be disproved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The visible and the invisible, the material and the spiritual, the phenomenal and the noumenal are no longer the distinct realms they once were. They have become mutually permeable to their mutual diminishment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We seem to see to the heart of things, to what German philosopher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/kant\/#:~:text=Immanuel%20Kant%20(1724%E2%80%931804),parts%20of%20his%20philosophical%20system.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immanuel Kant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> knew as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thing-in-itself#:~:text=In%20Kantian%20philosophy%2C%20the%20thing,opposed%20to%20phenomena%2C%20its%20manifestations.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the thing-in-itself<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to a degree undreamed of at the high-water mark of pure reason in the 18th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cameras of natural history programming miss nothing, even at the cellular level, even in pitch dark, and yet everything looks like the video that it is. There are those who continue to believe the Moon landings were a hoax just because the film evidence looks so fake and could so easily have been produced in a studio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/membership\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15805\" src=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Promo-member.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"400\" contrast, the notorious black-and-white <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roswell_incident\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extraterrestrial autopsy footage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Roswell, New Mexico, is an insultingly obvious fraud, as educated people reassured each other at the film\u2019s emergence in 1995, having forgotten for a moment that the absurdity lay not in the cinematography but in the very idea of an extraterrestrial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the classic mise-en-sc\u00e8ne \u2013 <\/span>at remote and deserted locations, country roads or woodlands at night <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span> UFO sightings reflect our yearning of what may lay beyond, romanticised impresses of more civilised lives, of wonder, imagination, anticipation and the unknown, all at once in opposition with incredulity, suspicion and doubt.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, at the end, this essay is mostly about us \u2013 people like you and I \u2013 and how we have come to forge belief and the countervailing powers that bring about certainty and
