{"id":15822,"date":"2025-10-03T14:51:22","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T04:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/?p=15822"},"modified":"2025-10-03T15:07:02","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T05:07:02","slug":"the-world-does-have-intelligent-design-says-andrew-hastie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/03\/the-world-does-have-intelligent-design-says-andrew-hastie\/","title":{"rendered":"The world \u201cdoes have intelligent design\u201d, says Andrew Hastie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ten years ago, during his first political campaign, Andrew Hastie <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2015\/sep\/10\/canning-byelection-andrew-hastie-refuses-to-give-his-views-on-creationism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refused to answer media questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about his religious views and whether he shared his father\u2019s beliefs in the Christian creationist myth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople are sick of this crap,\u201d he told a media pack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s no religious test in this country for public office. Like many Australians, I have a Christian faith, which presupposes the existence of a God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the campaign trail in the West Australian electorate of Canning a week earlier, and while standing alongside former prime minister John Howard, Hastie argued that media questions about his family and their religious beliefs were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2015\/sep\/03\/canning-byelection-andrew-hastie-deems-questions-on-family-and-religion-unacceptable\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ctotally unacceptable\u201d and \u201ccompletely irrelevant to this campaign\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the confrontation between Hastie and the media, Michael Lucy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themonthly.com.au\/monthly-today-128\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writing in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Monthly<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, argued that Canning voters were entitled to know Hastie\u2019s beliefs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crikey.com.au\/2015\/09\/17\/hastie-retreats-from-confirming-creationist-beliefs\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crikey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argued that Hastie\u2019s religious views were relevant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the public \u201cespecially as the power inside the Liberal Party finds a new balance\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was 10 years ago. Yet, even as speculation now rages that Hastie is positioning himself for a tilt at the Liberal Party leadership, the Australian media and public appear to be no clearer about Hastie\u2019s religious beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rationale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine \u2013 a publication of the Rationalist Society of Australia \u2013 can help shed some light on the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rationale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has discovered a podcast interview in which Hastie discusses Genesis \u2013 the first book of the biblical scriptures of both Judaism and Christianity that describes the creation of the Earth and humankind \u2013 with a pastor from Eastlake Church in Mandurah. A video of the interview, conducted last year, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v%3DFsnd9lkSFLo&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1759469624860707&amp;usg=AOvVaw288ojJmg7cxsmCVnbymuCG\">accessible on the church\u2019s YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the interview, Hastie says that Genesis \u201canswers a few of the big questions upfront\u201d, including about our origins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe first couple of chapters \u2013 it just reminds me of this world. It\u2019s not \u2013 it is not random. It\u2019s not just happening by chance. It does have intelligent design,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd there is a creator. And the first thing it reminds me of is to praise the creator, who is awesome, and powerful and good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"125Z47tOsYGITU10sYl8h7IQHSk5Mi3VoJ9bTE8iwldM6rAJe3tUfydZoxukXReLQEz0jSnpcDgWFFqALpy9cmwuCKb\"><iframe title=\"The world \u201cdoes have intelligent design\u201d, says Andrew Hastie\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F5ICkOxLBYU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, when the former Special Air Service army soldier was contesting the by-election in Canning, south of Perth, following the sudden death of the sitting member, media outlets took great interest in the religious views of his father, Peter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter Hastie was then principal and pastoral dean at Melbourne\u2019s Presbyterian Theological College and part of Creation Ministries International (CMI), which promotes the pseudoscience of young-Earth creationism. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creation.com\/whats-happened-to-the-horse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter has written against evolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the CMI website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2015\/sep\/10\/canning-byelection-andrew-hastie-refuses-to-give-his-views-on-creationism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to reports at the time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, candidate Hastie said he identified as an Anglican but refused to answer multiple questions on the topic of creationism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also shrugged off suggestions that his religious views could one day become very relevant to public policy-making \u2013 such as if he were to become the nation\u2019s science minister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo, look, look \u2026 I\u2019m interested in the people of Canning. I haven\u2019t done science since year 12 at high school and I\u2019m not interested in talking about curriculum or anything else; I\u2019m interested in talking about Canning and public policy solutions for them,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the podcast interview, Hastie does not explicitly say whether he believes \u2018young-Earth creationism\u2019, which claims that the Earth is thousands of years old \u2013 instead of billions of years \u2013 based on a literal interpretation of the Genesis account.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some religionists instead focus on \u2018intelligent design\u2019 as an alternative theory to evolution, emphasising what they claim is evidence of design in nature. Mainstream scientists have found no support for intelligent design challenging the fundamental principles of evolution and have pushed back against the efforts of its typically conservative Christian proponents, especially in the United States, to inject intelligent design into science classrooms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More mainstream Christians see no problem with evolution or with teaching evolution and related scientific approaches in schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the podcast, Hastie also speaks about the importance of his Christian faith in balancing the demands of a member of parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPolitics is a pressure cooker. There are lots of pressure on you personally, your family life. You often have to make compromises \u2013 and, by that, I don\u2019t mean about your deeply held beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut also politics holds a mirror up to yourself, as well. You see your strengths and you see your weaknesses. And, so, as a Christian, you\u2019re always conscious about pride and the other temptations that come at you through politics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing anchored in a church, as we are here, and being anchored in scripture, as well, it just reminds you of the need to humble yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hastie says he reads, at a minimum, four chapters of scripture a day as part of a routine, especially while travelling, and often prays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m just sending signals up throughout the day. I think it\u2019s always good to get on your knees and close the day with prayer, particularly when those days are hard. Just to be humbled.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent days, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has reported that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/sep\/25\/future-liberal-leader-or-party-disruptor-andrew-hastie-and-the-rise-of-the-maga-right\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hastie is emerging as de facto leader<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of what insiders describe as the \u201cMAGA right\u201d, aiming to drag the Liberal Party down a populist path.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the party\u2019s heavy defeat at this year\u2019s federal election and the elevation of moderate Sussan Ley to the leadership, Hastie has launched his own personal crusades, threatening to quit the shadow frontbench if the party recommitted to net zero by 2050 and freelancing on manufacturing and immigration policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15805\" src=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Promo-member.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Promo-member.png 1600w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Promo-member-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Promo-member-1024x256.png 1024w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Promo-member-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Promo-member-1536x384.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Age<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 under a headline dubbing Hastie \u2018Mr Conviction\u2019 \u2013 reported that Hastie \u201chas a deeply held Christian faith\u201d.
