{"id":15330,"date":"2025-03-06T17:28:55","date_gmt":"2025-03-06T06:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/?p=15330"},"modified":"2025-03-10T15:09:10","modified_gmt":"2025-03-10T04:09:10","slug":"having-secular-government-spaces-helps-us-respect-religious-differences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2025\/03\/06\/having-secular-government-spaces-helps-us-respect-religious-differences\/","title":{"rendered":"Having secular government spaces helps us respect religious differences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><i>This is a lightly edited transcript of a speech opposing a motion to reinstate Christian prayers in formal government meetings at the Wingecarribee Shire Council in New South Wales. <\/i><\/b><b><i>It is republished with permission of the speaker.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d like to speak against the motion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deciding on whether or not to pray is a conversation our community has already had with council, and had quite recently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last time there was a discussion about whether or not we should have a civic prayer, 68 per cent of respondents objected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If every time the council conduct a consultation and get an answer we don&#8217;t like, and we just try again, then we will quickly lose the trust of the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless, this decision should be about more than numbers. It should be about principles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a responsibility to represent everyone in our community. It\u2019s written, in black and white, in our job description in the Local Government Act that equality is important and we should respect the diversity of our population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our community should see themselves represented without bias towards particular groups or implying favour in our decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why governments at all levels should be secular spaces \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because this is how we respect religious difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision to scrap the prayer previously was one that reflected our collective commitment to inclusivity, respect, and diversity within our community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision also honoured the independence of thought of each councillor and our capacity to be guided by the values that we each hold dear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I understand that, for some people, including councillors here, will mean being guided by their Christian values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have great respect for that and I hope those councillors will continue to be guided by those values regardless of whether we are led in Christian prayer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I am not a Christian. I should not be required to pray and I should not be required to engage in prayer, just as I would not prevent others from praying should they wish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Future councillors and staff members may be Muslim, Bah\u00e1&#8217;\u00ed, Hindu or one of the many other religions represented across our community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell me: should any person ever be compelled, in their place of work, to pray to a God they don\u2019t believe in?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a lot of values in the proposed prayer that I agree with \u2013 wisdom, insight, integrity, compassion, care for the vulnerable, the common good, and the welfare of future generations, who are too often forgotten. These ideas deserve to be reflected on and championed here in this chamber.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, placing those ideas in the context of a Christian prayer risks excluding people who do not share that religious perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/make-a-donation\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15149\" src=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Support-in-2025.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Support-in-2025.png 1600w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Support-in-2025-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Support-in-2025-1024x256.png 1024w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Support-in-2025-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Support-in-2025-1536x384.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are councils in both Queensland and Victoria have been issued legal advice that to conduct Christian prayer in their meetings, which are the workplaces of councillors and staff, is actually discriminatory. I believe it is discriminatory here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I support people&#8217;s right to pray, but they should do it on their own time. There is nothing stopping any of us from taking some time before meetings to pray. This should not be imposed on others who choose not to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this motion passes, I will not participate in pre-meeting prayer. This council will make a deliberate decision to exclude me from this chamber on the basis of my beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would not do that to any of you.
