Queensland no longer deserves its historical reputation as the nation\u2019s conservative capital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take human rights, for example. Analysis of the Australian National University\u2019s 2022 Australian Election Study shows that Queenslanders favour marriage equality (73 per cent) at the same rate as the national average (73 per cent).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On abortion, 71 per cent of Queenslanders favour access on request, compared with a national average of 69 per cent. Just 5 per cent oppose abortion in all circumstances, compared with a national average of 5 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The poll also found that 75 per cent of Queenslanders support voluntary assisted dying (VAD) choice for the terminally ill, compared with a national average of 78 per cent. Just 10 per cent oppose it, compared with a national average of 11 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These human rights are hardly academic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queensland\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.qld.gov.au\/research-reports\/reports\/departmental\/voluntary-assisted-dying-review-board-annual-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">official report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its first full year of VAD law shows that 1,560 terminally ill people requested access. Three-quarters (76 per cent) were dying of cancer, and most (88 per cent) were over 60 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessing VAD is not just a so-called \u2018city elites\u2019 phenomenon, either. More than half of requests (53 per cent) were in regional and rural Queensland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of those who requested access, 793 people ended their life peacefully using VAD, consistent with their own deeply held values and with the opportunity to say goodbye to their loved ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This development is hardly surprising. Analysis of the massive Vote Compass poll from the 2019 federal election, comprising over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyingforchoice.com\/VoxPop_VAD_QLD\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">105,000 Queensland voters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, found overwhelming support for VAD across the political spectrum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Greens voters (89 per cent) supported VAD, as did 84 per cent of Labor voters, 75 per cent of Coalition (LNP) voters, and 76 per cent of minor party and independent voters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A separate YouGov poll of Queensland churchgoers in 2020 found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2020\/aug\/08\/most-queensland-churchgoers-say-they-support-voluntary-assisted-dying\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most supported VAD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was curious then that, leading up to the legalisation of VAD, the Catholic Church\u2019s spokesperson for VAD, Townsville Bishop Tim Harris, wrote to all Queensland MPs \u201con behalf of the 80,000 Catholics in my Archdiocese\u201d, urging MPs to oppose the reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But analysis of Vote Compass attitudes amongst Catholics in the eight Queensland state electorates that comprise the Bishop\u2019s archdiocese show most of the church\u2019s own flock (79 per cent) support VAD, with just 11 per cent opposed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, across the state, VAD is supported by 78 per cent of Catholics, 84 per cent of Anglicans, and 82 per cent of non-Christian religionists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support is in a considerable majority in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> electorate across the state, from 71 to 83 per cent. And most Queensland <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/documents.parliament.qld.gov.au\/committees\/HEC\/2021\/VADB2021\/submissions\/937.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nurses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (87 per cent) also support VAD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019d think with such widespread public backing that the human rights issues of abortion and VAD access would be settled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019d be wrong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re under dire threat from a small but highly active conservative religious base. And, according to at least one pundit, that base is likely to score an \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/lnp-is-set-for-an-easy-win-in-queensland-but-its-first-term-may-pose-a-much-greater-challenge-241009\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easy win<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 at this week\u2019s state election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katter\u2019s Australia Party\u2019s (KAP) leader Robbie Katter has vowed to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.townsvillebulletin.com.au\/news\/queensland\/state-election\/david-crisafulli-avoids-abortion-vad-questions-as-robbie-katter-one-nation-circle\/news-story\/e5cb36a9258533141257df5ead05e4d7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repeal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both abortion and VAD laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not that KAP is likely to control Queensland\u2019s sole parliamentary chamber, the Legislative Assembly, after the election. But Katter has promised \u2018carnage\u2019 to the LNP government if elected, in vigorous pursuit of his party\u2019s repeal agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/make-a-donation\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11873\" src=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation.png 1600w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1024x256.png 1024w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1536x384.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LNP leader David Crisafulli would rather not talk about it, making vague statements on the hustings of \u201cno plans\u201d to repeal the laws. Yet Katter is likely to have very sympathetic ears.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, just three LNP MPs voted in favour of abortion law reform. And in 2021, 23 of the 30 MPs who voted against VAD law reform were LNP members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is, \u201cno plans\u201d provides not even a faint whiff of plausible deniability for a major party with a strong track record of opposing social reforms that most Queenslanders support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Queenslanders may be tired of their Labor government. But voters should be careful what they wish (and vote) for.
