A self-declared \u201cChristmas tragic\u201d, she gets her Christmas tree set up early \u2013 in November \u2013 and tells her husband every year, \u201cThis is my best tree yet\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The advisor to Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate shared her love for Christmas at a 2020 church service that was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/live\/?ref=search&amp;v=488262691840600\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">live-streamed on Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the sermon, she also tells the story of a Santa Claus who was working in Gold Coast shopping malls on a \u201ckingdom assignment\u201d. She recalled the time she bumped into this Father Christmas at a mall and had to take a moment before recognising the man behind the beard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs he got closer to me, he went, \u2018G\u2019day, Pastor Sue\u2019&#8230; He\u2019s talking to me and I\u2019m trying to figure out who he is. And then he said: \u2018Do you know what, Sue? I love this time of year. God told me to become a Santa at Christmas time and go to the shopping centres.\u2019&#8230; And he said: \u2018I felt like God gave this to me as a kingdom assignment. So I sit and I have hundreds of children come and sit on my lap, and I pray and I prophesise over every one. I lay hands on them, I pray, and I speak prophetic words over them \u2013 I speak God\u2019s word over them. None of them know that I\u2019m doing it. The elves don\u2019t even know. The mums don\u2019t know. But God knows.\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Baynes, this covert operation was music to her ears.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd I was like oh, Lord, that is the most beautiful example of a covert assignment. Just think about it. Where else would you get an opportunity to go and pray for little children, be able to lay your hands on them. If you tried that in school these days, you\u2019d be out \u2013 in no time flat. So he found a way because God said to him, \u2018I want you to minister to children.\u2019 &#8230;Thousands and thousands of children in our city have been prayed over because of one man\u2019s vision of what he is called to do out there in the community. No fanfare. He\u2019s just doing it unto God. He\u2019s being the ecclesia. He\u2019s shifting culture.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Operating in a covert way is how Baynes says she prefers to pursue her \u201ckingdom assignment\u201d of achieving sustained transformation of the Gold Coast, a growing city in south-east Queensland often dubbed \u2018sin city\u2019. But that all changed in early 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January of that year, Tate appointed Baynes \u2013 already his informal spiritual advisor since 2012 \u2013 to a ratepayer-funded advisor role. Documents obtained under Right to Information laws reveal the appointment was a \u201cdirect\u201d one \u2013 meaning there was no job advertisement or competitive merit appointment process. Among the documents is an email in which the Mayor\u2019s Chief of Staff outlines details of the appointment:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c&#8230;I write to advise of the Mayor\u2019s decision to direct appoint Ms Sue Baynes as a Councillor Advisor. Sue will be going into the current vacant position of International Relations Admin Officer with the position title \u2018Pastoral Care Advisor\u2019. Whilst this is a fulltime (1.0 FTE) position, this appointment will only be on a casual basis as fulltime work is not currently required.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few weeks later, Gold Coast media began reporting the controversy over Tate\u2019s appointment of a \u2018Spiritual Advisor\u2019. Then, in March 2022, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dND4BqsTkww\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having discovered a video of a 2019 speech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from an Apostolic Reformation Australia event, I revealed that Baynes was a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/gold-coast-mayors-new-spiritual-adviser-supports-fundamentalist-ideology\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passionate supporter of the Seven Mountains Mandate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and had converted Tate to the ideology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baynes had met Tate leading up to his election as mayor in 2012. On the way to the initial meeting with the businessman, she prayed for the Lord to give her a word to share with him. And very quickly, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/movement.org.au\/learn\/video\/6ymg4h2gnskiisigqkwg0w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she recalled at another Christian event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Lord gave her Proverbs 29:2:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd it says, \u2018When the righteous rule, the people rejoice. But when the wicked rule, the people groan.\u2019 And at that moment I thought it could be a really short meeting!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Baynes felt emboldened to share her ideology. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After discussing Tate\u2019s faith journey \u2013 his conversion from Buddhism to Christianity \u2013 Baynes took the opportunity to outline, on a piece of paper, the Seven Mountains Mandate. The dominionist ideology provides a roadmap for Christians to conquer \u2013 or to \u201ctake dominion\u201d of \u2013 key spheres of influence in society: government; business; education; media and the arts; entertainment; religion; and the family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Baynes\u2019 several public retellings of this meeting, she has been emphatic that Tate fully embraced the idea of implementing the Seven Mountains Mandate, and asked for her support to do so if he were to win power. In an interview recorded at the 2020 Australian Coalition of Apostolic Leaders (ACAL) National Summit \u2013 the audio of which I accessed in 2022 on the Southern Cross Centre\u2019s SoundCloud account, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/southerncrosscentre\/12-interview-sue-baynes-gold%20https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/13hN3n2GqiLb4kk_dOo3k36M_7f3BkKt4\/view?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but has since been removed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Baynes said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI asked for a piece of paper and I drew out the Seven Mountain Mandate. I thought I might as well just go for the whole thing in this meeting. And I did \u2013 I just drew it all out. And he said, \u2018Sue, if I become mayor, will you help me bring this to the city? And I said, \u2018Absolutely, I will. I\u2019m there 100 per cent\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revelation about their support for the Seven Mountains Mandate sparked intense mainstream media interest in 2022, causing much unease at council chambers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au\/news\/council\/exposure-tom-tate-blames-the-evil-one-for-wife-ruths-medical-episode-as-pastor-sue-baynes-causes-council-divide\/news-story\/5d5036d3f1931b03da9c4155f49a095d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gold Coast Bulletin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> newspaper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the appointment created a split among Tate\u2019s leadership group and left some councillors \u201cvery disillusioned\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Tate tried to brush it off as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.triplem.com.au\/story\/tom-tate-defends-decision-to-hire-a-spiritual-advisor-on-staff-following-backlash-197291?fbclid=IwAR1_VUtdaf-WDZOCBHOEsiOIQxgJ8enbzek8tXPOvKF6Ia96FVAokWnERhU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cfake news\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a radio interview, the Gold Coast community was clearly concerned. According to a poll by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulletin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 92 per cent of more than 500 of its readers believed Baynes should not be paid by ratepayers to advise the Mayor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being asked by journalists, Tate seems to have successfully dodged providing a straightforward answer to whether he supports the Seven Mountains Mandate. In April 2022, the Rationalist Society of Australia\u2019s president, Meredith Doig, also called on him to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/rsa-questions-gold-coast-mayor-over-appointment-of-spiritual-advisor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirm for ratepayers whether he supported Baynes\u2019 ideology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but received no answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amidst the media storm and public outcry, Tate said he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-04-09\/gold-coast-mayor-does-not-recall-seven-mountains-mandate\/100965068\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did not recall offering support for the ideology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If someone&#8217;s got a good idea, I will acknowledge it and go for it. [If] there&#8217;s a Christian group who wants to link the various categories in those mountains to instead of acting as silos, but to be one community, well we should all welcome it.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-04-06\/tom-tates-spiritual-adviser-warned-of-demonic-stronghold-at-hota\/100964428?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&amp;utm_content=link&amp;utm_medium=content_shared&amp;utm_source=abc_news_web\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he told the ABC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that his personal views were just that \u2013 personal.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Similar to the views a journalist may have on a subject, the journalist must ensure their views do not influence their reporting. I apply the same values and principles to my role as mayor. That is, to keep my personal views private and to make decisions in the best interest of the majority of residents.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the cover was blown on Baynes\u2019 under-the-radar &#8220;kingdom assignment&#8221;, Tate appeared to be unperturbed. In media statements, he said council policy required that staff members\u2019 personal views <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-04-06\/tom-tates-spiritual-adviser-warned-of-demonic-stronghold-at-hota\/100964428?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&amp;utm_content=link&amp;utm_medium=content_shared&amp;utm_source=abc_news_web\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not affect their employment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Thousands of council employees have their own social media platforms and I expect many of these employees to publicly express their views on subjects like elections, fuel prices, religion, racism and discrimination. The important point is that these are their personal views and they must remain just that \u2013 personal. The same rule applies to the position of councillor adviser.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tate is facing re-election this month, with local government elections taking place across Queensland. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2573858326126163\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One media poll released earlier this month showed him behind<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the mayoral race. With days to go before voting, Gold Coast ratepayers remain in the dark as to Tate\u2019s views about the Seven Mountains Mandate. But concern over its potential influence on government is warranted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an effort to counter reporting that ratepayers were paying for a &#8216;Spiritual Advisor&#8217;, Tate told the media in 2022 that Baynes\u2019 role in his office was that of \u2018Council Advisor\u2019 \u2013 one of council\u2019s four Council Advisor employees. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au\/news\/council\/exposure-tom-tate-blames-the-evil-one-for-wife-ruths-medical-episode-as-pastor-sue-baynes-causes-council-divide\/news-story\/5d5036d3f1931b03da9c4155f49a095d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulletin<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was expected Baynes would be in the role for about six months, filling a position made vacant by a staffer on maternity leave. However, she has continued to work as Council Advisor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baynes appears to view her role differently from that of an ordinary advisory one. In July 2022, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-07-30\/gold-coast-ratepayers-paying-tom-tate-adviser-sue-baynes\/101272988\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ABC reported that it had obtained documents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about her contract and details of some of her work. While the contract defined her role as \u2018Council Advisor\u2019, Baynes characterised the role differently in communications with local pastors, describing it as \u201cnew\u201d and \u201cunique to the Gold Coast\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baynes has made no secret of using her role with the Mayor \u2013 before and after being added to council payroll \u2013 as a \u201ckingdom assignment\u201d for achieving \u201csustained transformation\u201d of the Gold Coast. In the 2020 ACAL National Summit interview, she said God had placed her with Tate and to walk with him in understanding his \u201ckingdom assignment\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd the more he has embraced his kingdom assignment and understood that that\u2019s what it is, the more he\u2019s opened doors for the church and made a way for us.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an letter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile\/100064734724496\/search\/?q=baynes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addressed to \u2018Prayer Warriors\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in January this year and signed off using her formal title of \u2018Council Advisor, Office of the Mayor\u2019, she outlined a list of policy ideas following the summer&#8217;s storms, such as changes to laws about trees and making homes storm resistant, but also changes to planning rules to allow church buildings &#8220;within the community, rather than just (in) industrial areas and schools&#8230;&#8221;. But she urged the recipients of the email to see these as part of \u201ca bigger picture\u201d for the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOverall, we want this place to be a safe place of flourishing for all residents\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where Jesus is exalted, and His Kingdom is advanced in practical and demonstrable ways.\u201d<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/evangelisminaus.podbean.com\/e\/spiritual-advisor-to-the-gold-coast-major\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a 2021 podcast interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Baynes talked about how Tate had begun involving her soon after winning election in 2012 and how she had since watched closely over him. She talked about communicating with him via text messages whenever she felt that the Lord wanted to communicate with him, including warning him of \u201ctraps that the enemy might be laying\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baynes has boasted of her gate-keeping role regarding who could access Tate. In the 2020 ACAL National Summit interview, she described having to \u201cshoulder-charge people out of the way\u201d to protect him from other influences.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have learned\u2026about the weightiness of the assignment and how I have to steward that. It is such a precious thing, but it\u2019s such a privilege. But I have had to shoulder-charge people out of the way that try to get in on where God has positioned me. Because, if you can imagine, if you get in that place of influence \u2013 and especially with a Christian mayor \u2013 and you have a whole lot of piranhas that think there\u2019s blood in the water\u2026 But it\u2019s true. They see an opportunity for an open door to get their agenda forward. And I&#8217;m like, \u2018No, that is not what it\u2019s about.\u2019 I have to constantly guard my mayor because that\u2019s what God has given me to do. I guard him. I guard our relationship, his wife.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qnews.com.au\/pastor-describes-job-gold-coast-mayor-tom-tates-discerner\/?fbclid=IwAR0S53LtjzXukZj7uNPTMUKTIrfANDQQGandbseMnV6uJTItOldVUbSTGG0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QNews<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Baynes also described herself as Tate\u2019s \u201cdiscerner\u201d in high-level meetings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo, I sit in high-level meetings and he says to me, \u2018I want you to be my eyes and ears. I want you to hear in your spirit and tell me what you think we need to do in the city\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tate argued there was a great need to bring Baynes on board in a formal capacity following flooding events on the Gold Coast. He told the media in 2022 that he wanted someone <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.triplem.com.au\/story\/tom-tate-defends-decision-to-hire-a-spiritual-advisor-on-staff-following-backlash-197291?fbclid=IwAR1_VUtdaf-WDZOCBHOEsiOIQxgJ8enbzek8tXPOvKF6Ia96FVAokWnERhU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201clearned in the church world\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who could connect resources and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au\/news\/council\/exposure-tom-tate-blames-the-evil-one-for-wife-ruths-medical-episode-as-pastor-sue-baynes-causes-council-divide\/news-story\/5d5036d3f1931b03da9c4155f49a095d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bring faith groups together<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in partnering with council on social issues like homelessness and domestic violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baynes had proven herself in this way. She was instrumental in building cooperation among Christian groups and organising activities, including the annual worship event \u2018Easter United\u2019. According to Baynes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/movement.org.au\/learn\/video\/6ymg4h2gnskiisigqkwg0w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tate gifted an amphitheater for the event at the cost of $94,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was this first staging of the event in 2018 \u2013 and Tate\u2019s subsequent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/movement.org.au\/learn\/video\/6ymg4h2gnskiisigqkwg0w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public baptism by Baynes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on that occasion \u2013 that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pWl2osv794I\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cshifted the spiritual atmosphere\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Gold Coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"CXQqRjPqMNSAlIKg9D4JzEvpdycTkO3GiBUjRUm0Z1HaWmGbfYpx3TFFl6a8CrKVr9n\"><iframe title=\"Sue Baynes: \u2018I have had to shoulder-charge people out of the way\u2019\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rqfxgNW6d-I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, collaboration has surged among Christian groups. Each month, Baynes joins with about 20 male pastors for the monthly Mayor&#8217;s Pastors Roundtable, where, she told the 2020 ACAL National Summit, they pray for answers on how to \u201ctransform\u201d the city. Baynes also facilitates the annual Mayor\u2019s Prayer Breakfast. When told that COVID restrictions would halve the capacity of the 2021 event, she said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pWl2osv794I\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tate agreed to hold the event twice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, as Baynes revealed at the 2020 ACAL National Summit, she, unlike some church representatives, was not content with just creating a sense of unity among Christians at such events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s like, \u2018No, no, no, no, no. We\u2019re nowhere near there. Let\u2019s keep pushing for how do we actually bring kingdom and change the culture of our city to look like the king and reflect his kingdom in very practical ways\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the answers to the roundtable pastors\u2019 prayers for transforming society was the establishment of a domestic family violence program that began training churches in how to deal with domestic violence and that linked them with government and services providers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Baynes spoke at the 2020 ACAL National Summit, it was only weeks out from the council election, and everything pointed to another landslide win. Another four years for Tate, she said, would help to \u201cland a whole heap of stuff that has been on the drawing board\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the ACAL interview, she revealed that \u201cputting a big stake in the ground in Israel\u201d was on the agenda. According to the plan \u2013 later impacted by the outbreak of COVID-19 \u2013 Baynes and her husband were to travel with Tate and his wife, along with a mayoral envoy, to Jerusalem in June 2020. The Gold Coast wanted to reinvigorate a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au\/Council-region\/About-our-city\/International-relations\/Sister-cities-international-relationships\/Netanya\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sister-city relationship with the Israeli city of Netanya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a relationship dormant for 30 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got meetings already planned with the Mayor of Netanya. What we are actually wanting to do\u2026is put a big stake in the ground in Israel and say the Gold Coast and Israel are now connected. So that, for me, is just an awesome step forward. Our Mayor is very, very excited about it. And we already feel that God is going to do amazing things in our city because we will pray for and bless Israel and the city of Jerusalem.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Israel has a special place for many evangelical Christians, with their loyalty to the state of Israel nurtured, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mqup.ca\/christian-attitudes-towards-the-state-of-israel-products-9780773521889.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Paul Charles Merkley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by a conviction that its restoration is a part of God&#8217;s plan for history. They believe that Israel is central to the promise of fulfillment <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/politics\/wp\/2018\/05\/14\/half-of-evangelicals-support-israel-because-they-believe-it-is-important-for-fulfilling-end-times-prophecy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the biblical prophecy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the return of Jesus and the beginning of the Rapture. Thus, events in Israel, says historian of religion Neil Young, are viewed as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/trump-will-bring-about-end-worldevangelicals-end-times-779643\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cfundamental to bringing about the End Times\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When the Trump Administration officially recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, many evangelicals, understanding the significance of the announcement, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/trump-will-bring-about-end-worldevangelicals-end-times-779643\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eagerly began looking forward to the End Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reported <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newsweek<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is not known if Tate shares this belief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the Israel trip, Tate had been scheduled to attend the Jerusalem Prayer Breakfast. With the event moved online and to October, he recited prayers in a video message \u2013 still <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpbitaly.org\/title\/tom-tate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available on the event\u2019s website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where he is described as \u2018Israel\u2019s Watchman\u2019. In the video, Tate prays:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs your sons and daughters, we choose to align ourselves and you to see Israel through your eyes. As many have prayed and declared, we come into agreement with the word of God concerning Israel and the city of Jerusalem.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jerusalem Prayer Breakfast is supported by a number of high-profile evangelical politicians around the world, including former US <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JdtLjIrZC1o\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secretary of State Mike Pompeo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 who was described on the event website as a fellow \u2018Watchman\u2019. Pompeo was instrumental in the Trump Administration\u2019s moving of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. He even declared that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/30\/us\/politics\/pompeo-christian-policy.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLord is at work here\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in regards to US foreign policy in the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July last year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jpbaustralia.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tate hosted the Jerusalem Prayer Breakfast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Gold Coast and delivered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5zj0KglU6X0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an opening speech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while Baynes led attendees in prayer. In recent years, Tate has sought to strengthen ties with Netanya, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jwire.com.au\/a-touch-of-israel-on-the-gold-coast-a-touch-of-australia-in-netanya\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naming a beachside area \u2018Netanya Park\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Surfers Paradise in 2021 and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.australianjewishnews.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressing hope for a closer relationship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and \u201congoing exchanges\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also on Baynes\u2019 \u201cdrawing board\u201d before the previous election was the desire to activate the \u201cbusiness mountain\u201d to deliver on her \u201cdeal\u201d with Tate from 2012. At the 2020 ACAL National Summit, she said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI really feel that it\u2019s now time for the business mountain to start connecting in with the church and the government\u2026 So I\u2019m really going to be pushing that part of the deal\u2026 So that\u2019s how we\u2019re working. We\u2019re looking at how we bring \u2013 how we position kingdom people in influence in all of those sectors across our city to change it with sustained societal transformation; just not a \u2018one shot and then we move on\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baynes says she first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/movement.org.au\/learn\/video\/6ymg4h2gnskiisigqkwg0w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heard about the Seven Mountain Mandate in 2007<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when, as a church pastor, she heard American <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7WboWrp-Cwo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter Wagner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> speak on the topic at a conference. According to Australian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eternitynews.com.au\/australia\/hillsong-fails-the-nar-test-and-that-is-good-news\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian commentator John Sandeman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Wagner was a respected researcher into church growth and later fostered the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) movement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NAR, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eternitynews.com.au\/australia\/hillsong-fails-the-nar-test-and-that-is-good-news\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote Sandeman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, holds a series of connected doctrinal positions: that the offices of Apostle and Prophet should be in today\u2019s church; that Christians should support dominionism and aim to establish God\u2019s kingdom on earth by gaining state authority; and that they should promote kingdom-minded people into key areas of society. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/11\/christian-dominionism-follow-the-money\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researcher Chrys Stevenson says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> NAR\u2019s leaders \u2013 revered as \u2018prophets\u2019 and \u2018apostles\u2019 \u2013 promote the Seven Mountains Mandate, aspiring to sit atop each one of these mountains on every nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"onDF5mXg3vMrpKqSOdLN2AwxuKGHflcpVcj17zTeYrPSLUky5NWyAiHwxC2I1Qad9tZkhPG4uIO0ogRT\"><iframe title=\"Sue Baynes: \u2018I really feel that it\u2019s now time for the business mountain\u2019\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g8CzW8Nk3gM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are \u201cmild forms\u201d of dominionism, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eternitynews.com.au\/australia\/hillsong-fails-the-nar-test-and-that-is-good-news\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandeman says supporters of \u201cextreme dominionism\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believe they can \u201cestablish the (literal) kingdom of God on earth \u2013 and are called to do so before Christ returns.\u201d Baynes\u2019 comments appear to place her towards the stronger end. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/movement.org.au\/learn\/video\/6ymg4h2gnskiisigqkwg0w\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a 2018 event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she spoke of Jesus\u2019 command to \u201coccupy\u201d territory to bring about sustained societal transformation until that territory \u201clooks like our king\u201d and \u201cuntil the ways of that territory are the ways of our king.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are reminded that it\u2019s not simply the number of Christians in the city that will bring sustained societal transformation. But it is the earnest deliberate stewardship of that blessing by his kingdom ambassadors across all sectors of society. Jesus said that if we fail to steward our Father\u2019s gift, it will be taken away. And he also said we are to occupy until He returns\u2026 His command was to occupy. And He is longing to hear the seventh angel cry out, \u2018The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ, and He shall reign forever\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baynes continues to be active in the apostolic network. In May last year, the Women&#8217;s Apostolic Alliance hosted a presentation by Baynes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1207848079876965\/?ref=newsfeed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The promotional material<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> detailed how Baynes was \u201cpassionate\u201d about seeing leaders of the Seven Mountains Mandate partnering, and described her appointment in Tate\u2019s office as \u201ca sign that God is breaking new ground for Jesus in our city\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September last year, she joined speakers at Pastor David Vaka\u2019s Brisbane church for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=697411505760842&amp;set=a.567881055380555\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROAR Apostolic Summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Social media posts show that Vaka has been preaching the Seven Mountains Mandate for a number of years, especially in the Pacific Islands. In July last year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bcs4300\/videos\/121851054281036\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he posted a sermon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the topic of the Seven Mountains Mandate:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think our church is probably one of the only churches in Brisbane that teaches this\u2026\u00a0 I think we\u2019re raising up disciples so that when you go out there you can disciple the system, the structure, the atmosphere and the culture you&#8217;re in. We raise up disciples to disciple nations. And you\u2019re probably wondering, \u2018What is a nation?\u2019 The seven mountains \u2013 really, the seven forces \u2013 make up a nation.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/make-a-donation\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14104\" src=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Support-in-2024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Support-in-2024.png 1600w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Support-in-2024-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Support-in-2024-1024x256.png 1024w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Support-in-2024-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Support-in-2024-1536x384.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among the guests at ROAR were: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/660219872692122\">Brian Heath<\/a>, pastor of a Gippsland church accused \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2022\/11\/08\/raised-in-her-fathers-church\/\">by one of his daughters<\/a>, Clare Heath-McIvor \u2013 of advocating dominionism; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bcs4300\/videos\/852413769211963\">Mark Robinson<\/a>, a pastor and state Liberal MP who has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/27\/holding-the-line-on-religious-instruction-for-the-christian-right\/\">lone voice pressuring the Queensland government<\/a> to keep scripture in public schools; and Labor\u2019s Speaker of the federal House of Representatives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=737371698194728&amp;set=a.226917055906864\">Milton Dick<\/a> \u2013 who, otherwise, has no known connection to dominionism and may have appeared simply as the local MP for the area. Dick has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?ref=search&amp;v=3016948875209793&amp;external_log_id=500c8587-fda2-4c9e-a654-427ba8fd87bb&amp;q=breakthrough%20church%20milton%20dick\">previously spoken at the church<\/a> about how he helped it obtain a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infrastructure.gov.au\/territories-regions-cities\/regional-australia\/regional-and-community-programs\/stronger-communities-programme\">government grant<\/a> of $20,000 to build a cafe.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The threat of dominionism is a clear and present danger to democracy in the United States, where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/mike-johnson-prayer-repentance-demons-1234962043\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian nationalism is on the rise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Trump Republican Party. But for Heath-McIvor \u2013 who walked away from her family\u2019s church \u2013 dominionism also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/08\/radicalisation-and-white-christian-nationalism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poses a bonafide threat to Australia\u2019s democracy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, requiring Australians to \u201cstep on this now.\u201d In his latest report in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/religiosity-in-australia\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Religiosity in Australia<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, social researcher Neil Francis revealed, \u201cshockingly for Australia\u2019s secular democracy\u201d, that more than three-quarters of a million adults are dominionists, \u201cbelieving theirs to be the only acceptable religion and that religious authorities ought to be final arbiters of law\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tate\u2019s right to personal spirituality and Christian belief is not in question. But many Gold Coasters are troubled by reports of Baynes\u2019 ideology and her comments linking Tate to it.
