{"id":13882,"date":"2023-12-11T22:49:54","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T11:49:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/?p=13882"},"modified":"2024-03-13T12:29:10","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T01:29:10","slug":"christian-dominionism-follow-the-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/11\/christian-dominionism-follow-the-money\/","title":{"rendered":"Christian dominionism: Follow the money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>This article is based on a speech given by the author at the <a href=\"https:\/\/secularism.au\/\">Secularism Australia Conference<\/a> on 2 December in Sydney.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all its faults, Australia is a free and democratic country with, generally, sensible attitudes towards religion and one of the best electoral systems in the world. It\u2019s easy to be complacent and imagine this could never change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chrysstevenson.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the rise of Christian dominionism \u2013 a very close cousin of Christian nationalism \u2013 for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/religion\/is-the-australian-christian-lobby-dominionist\/10101124\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last 12 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s an ideology that teaches that Jesus will not return to earth until his followers have established a global theocracy which will see Old Testament Biblical Law enforced across every nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dominionists\u2019 plan for achieving total world domination is called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seven_Mountain_Mandate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven Mountains Mandate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Followers of this ideology are encouraged, trained and mentored, to infiltrate and conquer the Seven Mountains of Influence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These \u201cmountains\u201d represent: government (including law, the military, and our electoral system); business (including unions); education; media and the arts; entertainment; religion; and the family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Seven Mountains Mandate is a political strategy devised and promoted by a large, but nebulous group, called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Apostolic_Reformation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Apostolic Reformation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NAR). The NAR\u2019s leaders, revered as \u201cprophets\u201d and \u201capostles\u201d, aspire, eventually, to sit atop each one of these mountains on every nation on earth \u2013 at which point Jesus will return to rapture them to eternal glory in Heaven.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may never have heard of NAR, and that\u2019s just how they like it. But <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apostolic networks are among the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apostolic-Prophetic_Movement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fastest growing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movements in the modern Christian world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be surprised to hear that, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/churchwatchcentral.com\/2018\/01\/10\/is-your-church-part-of-houstons-narpostolic-australian-christian-churches-acc-network\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ChurchWatch Central<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/churchwatchcentral.com\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australian group of concerned pastors, elders and church-goers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, NAR is associated with over 1000 churches here in Australia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of NAR\u2019s Seven Mountains strategy is for evangelical Christians to infiltrate governments and the public institutions which surround them, quietly building power and influence within those institutions, with the objective of gaining complete control.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you look at this as a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movement, there is so much about dominionism that just doesn\u2019t make sense. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sightmagazine.com.au\/30678-essay-when-religion-gets-political\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tim Costello<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Australia\u2019s Centre for Public Christianity, shares my sense of puzzlement about why fundamentalist Christians would embrace a political agenda so totally antithetical to the teachings of Jesus. He says:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you preach Jesus\u2019 love of enemies and defend gun ownership or separate children from parents and place them in cages at the Texan border?\u00a0 And how do you reduce the Gospel to securing Supreme Court appointments simply so they will overturn Roe v Wade?\u00a0 Why would you suppress telling the truth in schools about US racial history by dismissing it as &#8220;woke&#8221;?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Reverend Costello: \u201cYou do all that by engaging in a political Christianity that wants to rule.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tif.ssrc.org\/2020\/04\/02\/gorski-and-perry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Samuel Perry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a leading expert on Christian nationalism, suggests we should look on it as a kind of \u201cimpostor Christianity.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/evangelicals-rejecting-jesus-teachings-liberal-talking-points-pastor-1818706\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russell Moore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, formerly a top official with the Southern Baptist Convention and now the editor-in-chief of\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christianity Today<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says this is Christianity radicalised to the point that some American pastors cannot preach the Sermon on the Mount without being heckled for endorsing \u201cwoke\u201d liberal talking points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to understand why people who call themselves Christians also oppose government welfare, public schools, gun control and action on climate change, I decided to follow the money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I discovered was an unholy alliance between evangelical Christians affiliated with NAR\u2019s Seven Mountains strategy, and a league of ultra-wealthy libertarians who operate a complex, international network of right-wing think-tanks \u2013 many of which fall under the umbrella of a group known as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlas_Network\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlas Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ideology expressed in this coalition is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paleolibertarianism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paleolibertarianism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nothing to do with \u2018Paleo Pete\u2019!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how it works: the Christians took on the libertarians\u2019 economic agenda. In return, the ultra-wealthy libertarians encouraged the politicians who benefit from their donations to endorse the dominionists\u2019 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">religious<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> agenda. Why? Because the Christians provide the ultra-wealthy with a voting bloc to get their agents into power and remove the taxes and regulations which impact negatively on the unfettered accumulation of wealth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surprisingly, the aims of Christian dominionists and nationalists and the ultra-wealthy libertarians dovetail neatly. The libertarians see democracy as an inconvenient obstacle to free-market capitalism. The Christians see democracy as an impediment to instituting Biblical law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In America, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bjconline.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ffrf.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom from Religion Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have banded together to fight Christian nationalism. Their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5cfea0017239e10001cd9639\/t\/6203f007e07275503964ab4d\/1644425230442\/Christian_Nationalism_and_the_Jan6_Insurrection-2-9-22.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the involvement of Christian nationalists in the January 6 insurrection describes how this mutual back-scratching works:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The [Christian nationalist] movement threw its support behind Mr. Trump at a critical moment, delivering to him the Republican Party\u2019s most reliable slice of electoral votes. He in turn gave the movement everything he had promised them: power and political access, access to public money, policies favorable to their agenda, and above all the appointment of hard-right judges.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking to a gathering of religious right activists in 2021, Senator Lindsey Graham boasted: \u201cBottom line is President Trump delivered, don\u2019t you think?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public support for Trump and the paleolibertarian agenda has been boosted by scare campaigns warning that voting for progressive candidates will lead the United States towards socialism or communism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, in a delicious touch of irony, I discovered the Seven Mountains strategy was not, as its proponents claim, delivered by revelation direct from God; they pretty much <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.evangelicalreview.net\/01-2018_ter_tanksley-&amp;-schaich_%27marxist-7mm.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plagiarised it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the work of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mforbes.sites.gettysburg.edu\/cims226\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Week-3b-Louis-Althusser.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marxist philosopher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Antonio Gramsci. Gramsci and his followers devised a strategy to overturn capitalism by gaining control of the eight \u2018ideological state apparatuses\u2019 \u2013 an almost identical list to the Seven Mountains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have to admit, it takes a certain kind of hubris for rabid anti-communists to pinch an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actual communist plot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and rebrand it as \u201cthe Word of God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Seven Mountains strategy is working. If a Republican wins the US election in 2024, the white-anting of American democracy will continue in earnest. Trump has already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govexec.com\/workforce\/2022\/07\/trump-endorsed-plan-purge-civil-service-rogue-bureaucrats\/375028\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flagged his intention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to dismiss up to 50,000 secular civil servants and replace them with Trumpist, paleolibertarian, loyalists. That\u2019s the Seven Mountains strategy on steroids!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can all seem very US-centric but I am convinced that what is happening in America \u2013 and in South America, Europe, and now in New Zealand \u2013 will play out next in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australian Clare Heath-McIvor was raised in a dominionist church in Victoria, where her father is the pastor. Brian Heath\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/victoria\/inside-city-builders-the-pentecostal-sect-with-lofty-political-goals-20221117-p5bz1x.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City Builders church<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was affiliated with the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonathan-david.org\/isaac-network\/#tab-1-1-purpose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Strategic Alliance of Apostolic Churches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ISAAC) \u2013 a kind of south-east Asian branch of NAR. As part of that group, Heath-McIvor\u00a0 remembers being encouraged to chant: \u201cWhat time is it? It\u2019s time to take over.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/08\/radicalisation-and-white-christian-nationalism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an article published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rationale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earlier this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Heath-McIvor warned that Christian nationalism is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bonafide<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> threat to democracy. And she insisted, \u201cAustralians need to step on this <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t want to turn this into a McCarthyist kind of witch-hunt. The extent to which these ideologies are embraced by evangelical Christians and libertarians exists on a spectrum. That said, the destruction of democracy is enthusiastically embraced by paleolibertarian leaders and they have a significant following, even here in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Pastor Ian Shelton\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/religion\/is-the-australian-christian-lobby-dominionist\/10101124\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toowoomba City Church<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Back in 2011 when I first embarked on this research, the church\u2019s website described Shelton\u2019s goal to turn Toowoomba into:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230; a transformed city where all the spheres \u2013 sport, arts, leisure, welfare, health, media &amp; information, law, police, judiciary, politics &amp; government, business &amp; commerce, &amp; education \u2026 come under the lordship of Christ.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, while a little church in Toowoomba can seem like small potatoes, remember there are at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/churchwatchcentral.com\/2018\/01\/10\/is-your-church-part-of-houstons-narpostolic-australian-christian-churches-acc-network\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1000 churches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around Australia preaching the same doctrine. Tell me, how would politicians respond if it were 1000 mosques, backed by a global international network, urging their followers to take control of this country\u2019s democratic institutions by stealth?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can\u2019t be complacent. We have already seen a Pentecostal prime minister secretly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2022\/aug\/16\/scott-morrison-five-more-secret-ministries-minister-portfolio-ministry-including-treasury-home-affairs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appointing himself<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to no less than five federal government ministries. We have seen Christian nationalists stacking Liberal Party branches in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/politics\/liberal-survivor-puts-spotlight-on-right-wing-churches-20210315-p57au7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Australia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sydneycriminallawyers.com.au\/blog\/sa-liberals-conduct-purge-of-pentecostals-after-the-infiltration-of-party-ranks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Australia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/politics\/victoria\/the-religious-minority-seizing-power-in-the-liberal-party-20180601-p4ziyq.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-11-07\/religious-right-roadmap-infiltrate-liberal-party\/101611840\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a roadmap came to light, outlining how the religious right could infiltrate the Liberal Party with godly candidates.\u00a0 We have heard how the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/politics\/politics-display\/mayor-tom-tate-is-robbin-the-hood,17923\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gold Coast Mayor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appointed a \u201cspiritual advisor\u201d with her own office and six-figure salary. And <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-07-30\/gold-coast-ratepayers-paying-tom-tate-adviser-sue-baynes\/101272988\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she has insisted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the mayor ecstatically agreed to help her implement the Seven Mountains strategy on the glitter strip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In northern NSW, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2022\/apr\/21\/nsw-nationals-candidate-tells-congregation-of-her-aim-to-bring-gods-kingdom-to-politics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Party candidate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> declared:\u00a0 \u201cI want to bring God\u2019s kingdom to the political arena. And I want God\u2019s kingdom to penetrate the political mountain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As secularists, our eyes have been fixed firmly on the Christian component of this kooky confederation of Christianity and cash. And if we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">look at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s easy to tell ourselves they couldn\u2019t organise a school picnic, let alone a bloodless coup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have to realise that the Christians are the circus; the brains, the money, the power and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strategy is in the far-right libertarian think-tanks which support them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently,\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/politics\/politics-display\/atlas-networks-fossil-fuelled-campaign-against-the-voice,17973\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Jeremy Walker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Sydney\u2019s University of Technology, alerted us to the activities of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/epress.lib.uts.edu.au\/journals\/index.php\/mcs\/article\/view\/8813\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlas Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here in Australia. Substantially funded by billionaire Charles Koch and a number of multinationals with interests in fossil fuels and tobacco, Atlas is the network that enlisted the Christian dominionists and nationalists of NAR to build the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/ng-interactive\/2019\/jan\/23\/free-market-thinktanks-tobacco-industry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tea Party<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movement and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2022\/07\/14\/gops-army-christian-nationalists-and-white-supremacists-poses-danger-greater-you\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infiltrate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Republican Party.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/admin.atlasnetwork.org\/assets\/documents\/books\/The-Freedom-Movement-Its-Past-Present-and-Future-By-Brad-Lips.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Australia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Atlas Network <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/admin.atlasnetwork.org\/assets\/documents\/books\/The-Freedom-Movement-Its-Past-Present-and-Future-By-Brad-Lips.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eight think-tanks as \u201cpartners\u201d including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Centre_for_Independent_Studies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centre for Independent Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Institute_of_Public_Affairs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute of Public Affairs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Australian Institute for Progress<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2023\/aug\/10\/conservative-group-libertyworks-has-not-paid-more-than-172000-it-owes-government-over-failed-legal-cases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LibertyWorks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the organisation which brought the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpac.network\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conservative Political Action Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Australia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/374262009_Silencing_the_Voice_the_fossil-fuelled_Atlas_Network's_campaign_against_constitutional_recognition_of_Indigenous_Australia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Jeremy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Atlas <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">itself<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not a think tank. Rather, it is the \u201cmother-of-all-think-tanks.\u201d It\u2019s an umbrella organisation which provides seed-funding and strategic guidance to 515 libertarian think-tanks across nearly 100 countries and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coordinates their activities<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They represent themselves as independent voices but they are involved in strategic campaigns coordinated by a foreign interest group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of those pulling the strings in the Atlas Network are also members of another far-right group, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmog.com\/mont-pelerin-society\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mont Pelerin Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose members have included our own John Howard, mining lobbyist, Hugh Morgan, co-founders of the Centre for Independent Studies Greg Lindsay and Maurice Newman, and John Roskam \u2013 until recently the executive director of the Institute of Public Affairs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a close association between the Atlas Network and Jordan Peterson\u2019s newly formed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alliance_for_Responsible_Citizenship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alliance for Responsible Citizenship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which recently held <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/politics\/federal\/why-leading-liberals-have-descended-on-london-this-week-20231031-p5eg8h\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a conference in London<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2019\/nov\/29\/rightwing-thinktank-conservative-boris-johnson-brexit-atlas-network\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two shareholders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the ARC,\u00a0 the Legatum Institute, is also an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2019\/nov\/29\/rightwing-thinktank-conservative-boris-johnson-brexit-atlas-network\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlas Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> partner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are six Australians on the ARC\u2019s advisory board, which also includes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two pastors, a professor of religion and Mike Johnson, the new Republican speaker, who we know has strong affiliations with Christian dominionism. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 1500 people who attended their London conference, a whopping 10 per cent were Australians \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/politics\/federal\/why-leading-liberals-have-descended-on-london-this-week-20231031-p5eg8h\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many of them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leading Liberal politicians. Family First Party national director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyfirstparty.org.au\/a_vision_for_family_prosperity_hope_why_family_first_is_jumping_aboard_the_arc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyle Shelton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was also there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlas Network has form: it is credited with influencing the election of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmog.com\/2023\/08\/22\/javier-milei-argentina-atlas-network\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autocratic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ultra-conservative leaders in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/08\/09\/atlas-network-alejandro-chafuen-libertarian-think-tank-latin-america-brazil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazil, Argentina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/03\/03\/geert-wilders-freedomcenters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Netherlands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, recently, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2023\/10\/31\/chiding-in-plain-sight\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Zealand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Will Australia be next?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may seem disconnected from matters of church and state, but, as one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2022\/11\/15\/dominionism-republican-candidate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American professor of religion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says, we need to recognise that Christian dominionism is just \u201cpart of the tool kit of political radicalism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Australia moved to recognise Indigenous Australians in our constitution and give them a Voice to Parliament, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/374262009_Silencing_the_Voice_the_fossil-fuelled_Atlas_Network's_campaign_against_constitutional_recognition_of_Indigenous_Australia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlas Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set to work here, coordinating the efforts of its Australian think-tanks and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-01-20\/tony-abbott-advising-controversial-lobby-group-advance-australia\/101873526\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">setting up<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/374262009_Silencing_the_Voice_the_fossil-fuelled_Atlas_Network%27s_campaign_against_constitutional_recognition_of_Indigenous_Australia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advance Australia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to spear-head the \u2018No\u2019 campaign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They didn\u2019t have to reinvent the wheel. The Atlas Network had already been successful in effectively <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/jul\/18\/conservative-us-network-undermined-indigenous-energy-rights-in-canada\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinking a United Nations campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure greater involvement by Indigenous communities in oil and gas production in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/make-a-donation\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11873\" src=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1024x256.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1024x256.png 1024w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1536x384.png 1536w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2023\/apr\/18\/who-is-jacinta-price-and-how-did-she-become-a-central-player-in-the-voice-referendum\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacinta Price<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npc.org.au\/speaker\/2023\/1227-warren-mundine-ao\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warren Mundine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are associates of the Atlas Network-affiliated Centre for Independent Studies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/independentaustralia.net\/politics\/politics-display\/paying-the-price-the-no-case-infected-by-fanatical-christianity-,17948\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchandstate.com.au\/2023-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strong ties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to religion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding to the \u2018toolkit\u2019, during the Voice campaign it was announced that, under the auspices of Advance Australia, another group, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2023\/oct\/11\/indigenous-voice-to-parliament-referendum-lyle-shelton-family-first-no-campaign\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christians for Equality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, had been formed, with our old friend, Lyle Shelton, appointed to head it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A triumphant \u2018test-run\u2019 for the Atlas Network in Australia, its scare campaign managed to bring support for the Voice <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/indaily.com.au\/news\/2023\/09\/11\/new-poll-shows-voice-support-dropping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">down 20 points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resulting in the catastrophic defeat of the referendum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What might Atlas achieve at our next federal election? And to whom will conservative politicians be in debt?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If paleolibertarianism gains a firm foothold here in Australia, their targets will include voluntary assisted dying, women\u2019s reproductive choice, government welfare, public schools, Medicare, unions, marriage equality, gay rights, anti-discrimination laws, immigration and refugees, the rights of people from non-Christian religions, and more. Jacinta Price has already flagged that transgender people are next on her hit-list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So many groups are threatened by this movement. Yet, we all tend to fight independently on different fronts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This goes beyond a risk to the separation of church and state; Australian democracy is at stake. We need to look at what\u2019s happening in America and start taking dominionism, Christian nationalism and these libertarian think-tanks deadly seriously.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think we need to pull together a peak group of organisations, including unions and mainstream churches, to counter this movement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultra-wealthy benefactors with progressive ideas <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exist \u2013 and while we don\u2019t want this to become a \u201cclash of the titans\u201d, we need substantial funding to devise and implement a strategy to counter this assault on our democracy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no point tinkering at the edges. We need professional political strategists and communications experts on board to help craft a cunning plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, we have to understand that the crazy circus that surrounds this movement is a feature, not a bug.
