{"id":13452,"date":"2023-08-02T15:17:01","date_gmt":"2023-08-02T05:17:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/?p=13452"},"modified":"2023-08-02T15:17:01","modified_gmt":"2023-08-02T05:17:01","slug":"why-the-armys-choice-to-serve-god-comes-at-a-cost-to-the-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/02\/why-the-armys-choice-to-serve-god-comes-at-a-cost-to-the-nation\/","title":{"rendered":"Why the Army\u2019s choice to serve God comes at a cost to the nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 8 July 2023, the Australian Army, specifically the 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Armoured Regiment, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to march through the streets of a major capital city, display its military hardware and inspire the next generation of potential recruits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Army had a chance to display that it was not a conservative and traditional Army but was instead a progressive, multicultural, diverse and technologically advanced organisation. It had a chance to market itself to a broad demographic that it was representative of the nation\u2019s population. In doing so, it could have hoped to secure the next tranche of recruits that would be responsible for the defence of the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, it squandered an opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By parading through the streets of Adelaide, led by several white Christian male chaplains, and by conducting a Christian church service to proclaim the move of a regiment\u2019s guidons \u2013 or \u2018sacred flags\u2019, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=662741748612942\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as described by one news agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 from one city to another, the Army ignored several realities of Australia in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It ignored the fact that a majority of the regiment\u2019s members are not Christian. It ignored the fact that there are likely non-Christians currently serving in the regiment. And it ignored the fact that the regiment will be less Christian next year and in the years that follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.gov.au\/our-heritage\/traditions\/colours-standards-guidons-and-banners\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ceremonies around the colours, standards, guidons and banners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Australian Army are deeply rooted in tradition, many of which reflect British Christian rituals from centuries ago. However, times change, the population changes and the Army has changed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theforge.defence.gov.au\/publications\/still-losing-our-religion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Forge<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I wrote about the latest data on the decline of religious affiliation in the Australian Defence Force. As at 1 January 2023, almost 64 per cent of full-time members did not have a religious affiliation, continuing a trend observed for two decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Nz6qsrfLCwQwekIVyASiTtyJp9Wh5lcKHoBXU1bGdcPMH4gG0vM3WLPjqOAkS6DYri\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Australian Army&#39;s show of force in Adelaide stuns, disturbs <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/D2reU71Ttj\">https:\/\/t.co\/D2reU71Ttj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Daily Mail Australia (@DailyMailAU) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DailyMailAU\/status\/1678262023732314112?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 10, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in Adelaide \u2013 the so-called \u2018city of churches\u2019 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/census\/find-census-data\/quickstats\/2021\/LGA40070\">ABS Census data show that a majority (50.8 per cent) of the population<\/a> identify as having no religion (and that figure excludes those who identify in the Census as atheist, agnostic and with other secular beliefs)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although traditions are necessary and very important to the Army and its members, the manner in which they are observed needs to be contemporised from time to time. When the population of the Army and the nation that it represents no longer reflect the Christian observances in its traditions, then it\u2019s time for change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This need is further heightened when Christian rituals not only fail to reflect the population but risk ostracising and isolating large sectors of the community from which the Army seeks its support and from which it recruits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The customs and traditions of the Australian Army and the wider Australian Defence Force don\u2019t need to persist with Christian rituals. This is a choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ceremonies such as that conducted in Adelaide didn\u2019t need to occur in a cathedral, be presided over by chaplains, contain prayer, hymns or readings (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/AivMX1NKTgE?app=desktop&amp;feature=share&amp;fbclid=IwAR0IOJl9uhsHn2yJ5dxZWX9u6AmIDWsiuEpR-Fn9Wupa5li3N6LZg86oC_E\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">watch the full church service here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).
