Dad! We learned it at school!&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was how my son defended his claim that \u201cGod created the whole world&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidently, this was a \u2018fact\u2019 he had been \u2018taught\u2019 in Religious Instruction (RI) class at his state school. He was also told that Jesus loves him and died to save us all but was miraculously resurrected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And these unverifiable beliefs were taken as truths beyond reproach because he learned them at school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wondered who was more na\u00efve \u2013 my six-year-old son or me for assuming state schools wouldn&#8217;t facilitate evangelism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, this moment crystallised what\u2019s wrong with RI and motivated me to campaign against it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even given the above experience, I was unsurprised by a 2021 video of a volunteer describing state schools as &#8220;amazing mission fields&#8221; in conversation with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/rsa-raises-concerns-with-qld-minister-over-citipointes-involvement-in-public-schools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citipointe Churc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">h<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pastor Tim McDonald.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8220;I saw over 100 children make an active, willing decision to go and follow us and be in the kingdom of Heaven&#8221;, gushed the volunteer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McDonald responded: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Wow. Wow. So incredible. Anyone lead 100 people to Christ this week, as well? That is a powerful, powerful mission field. What an incredible, incredible thing. Now, we also are blessed here in Queensland, as you said, legislated that this is legal to happen in schools.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The volunteer continued:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s almost like having a church in the school system\u2026the mission opportunity is incredible. And, with that, you can have a potential to harvest hundreds for the Lord. And disciple them afterwards&#8221;.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to government policy, state schools must halt curriculum learning for up to one hour per week for RI classes. Children from Year 1 onwards attend RI in the religion nominated by their parents, assuming lessons in that faith are available. More than 95 per cent of RI is Christian, mostly preaching a conservative version of the faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Segregated from their classmates, non-participants cannot continue with curriculum learning. Instead, they do unstructured free reading or revision supervised by a teacher. These days, only 25 per cent of students opt in to RI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given our stagnating literacy and numeracy rates, we are losing precious class time for the benefit of a shrinking minority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The materials used for RI are neither vetted nor approved by the education department. In 2016, I published several articles outlining inappropriate and disturbing classes, including the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roleplaying of beheadings as part of the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/comment\/the-horrifying-religious-instruction-classes-planned-for-qld-schools-20160420-gobbpk.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David and Goliath<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fable,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and age-inappropriate horror stories about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/opinion\/connect-religious-instruction-says-vampires-fake-but-bible-is-fact-20160627-gpslcs.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vampires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other lessons told k<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ids<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/national-affairs\/education\/be-selfish-and-you-die-kids-taught-in-religion-class\/news-story\/c220389e37aadefb90f3d7cb386c1234\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they &#8220;will die&#8221; if they are selfish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/QldParentsSecularStateSchools\/photos\/pcb.1651837808410845\/1651837225077570\/?type=3&amp;amp;theater\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like dirty towels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in need of cleansing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following a 2016 Queensland<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/statements.qld.gov.au\/Content\/MediaAttachments\/2016\/pdf\/Review%20of%20RI%20Connect%20materials%20August%202016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">education department review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some of these lessons were modified or removed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fundamental problem with RI is that learning settings are appropriated to present beliefs as facts. RI is evangelism posing as education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children as young as five and six are told to take falsehoods as fact, myths as history, and unverifiable propositions as certain knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Untrained volunteers assume the authority of teachers using unapproved materials to preach rather than teach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sydney Morning Herald<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 27 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">June 2016, I noted that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/christianri.org.au\/info-for-schools\/#:~:text=Connect%C2%A0is%20a%20three-year%20program%20presented%20across%20three%20levels,major%20characters%20from%20the%20Old%20and%20New%20Testaments.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connect<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RI materials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developed by Youthworks, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taught <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/QldParentsSecularStateSchools\/photos\/bc.Abo2fnkAqiTdoEMgXJXwlqs2djnCtFm92TltqROoZ-aKxd-4McLY_ZVT0PBFflJoaVjlmtw9Y4dar4toYD-azN95yxCxk-gYVTMEp_iDS7kdOr7dPoT_GUmavPBCKl5iSI5BjuEGRdd12fzQGQ2C2Qr-P9RK3bhPLJqe1pnfiqyhBxAFG_RI4jArB8WxpaX2b07GyWmvR-lhD4GFOV1B6rCF\/1664845420443417\/?type=1&amp;amp;opaqueCursor=Abphs3I7hHLdVphevBtv_4LXQhaOcnun0swyOGvZBFD6Qb1Oy3I_pZE3FziwLAXpjw-ZmYK3fttImRhITOJbgEJmd5M4VopTpET6XaVx3lmwCeoboc4KEAovI14oCa6l6TiuXR-JkSqQJilDVcrX1WCF8kcSO5-UlsHdVxxrgC3f7jefa4NCwb8O3tF4pJ66A447M_YZnGpLhE0c8c9jfBEfMvA6_13f2Wm7tiAPqTBybKzFv08TdXiUDT0CZhZF2chxuYgxjEustSnwILKXfwCaLOaZedIeoXVQcMm90q_mMA&amp;amp;theater\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bible is God&#8217;s word: that it is historically reliable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and still relevant today.&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stories about Adam and Eve, and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/QldParentsSecularStateSchools\/photos\/pcb.1649741151953844\/1649735601954399\/?type=3&amp;amp;theater\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noah&#8217;s Ark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are presented as historical facts, despite both having been disproven by science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disturbingly, studies have found the teaching of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/creationism-common-in-religious-instruction-materials-webinar-told\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creationism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commonplace in Queensland schools. A current Connect lesson, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cepstore.com.au\/IdaProductQAYW?Id=01t0K000005mw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Big Questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019, contrasts the Bible narrative of Creation with the theory of Evolution and asks students to say which option appeals to them more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though Christian RI advocates deny proselytising, the evidence is pervasive and damning. RI materials provider <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quizworx.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quizworks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said &#8220;they exist to evangelise children&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The provider of Connect, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youthworks.net\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youthworks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has previously claimed that making disciples &#8220;is why we exist&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2016 Queensland<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/statements.qld.gov.au\/Content\/MediaAttachments\/2016\/pdf\/Review%20of%20RI%20Connect%20materials%20August%202016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">education department review<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found the materials contained examples of possible proselytising. It noted: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026legal advice provided by faith groups has indicated the view there is no legislative basis for prohibition of proselytising in the EDPA or EDPR [the relevant Education Acts].&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children are encouraged to participate in prayers similar to the example below from Youthworks Connect 2016:\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>\u201cDear God, thank you that Jesus died on the cross so I could be part of your family. I am sorry for wanting to live my own way, but now I want to live your way. Please forgive me and help me to learn more about you. Amen.\u201d<\/i> <i>If you prayed that prayer in your head, welcome to God&#8217;s family! You&#8217;re a Kingdom Kid.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/creationism-common-in-religious-instruction-materials-webinar-told\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monash University study by Dr Jennifer Bleazby<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raised concerns that church groups were using the lessons to indoctrinate children. Dr Bleazby was \u2018alarmed\u2019 the program<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> risks fostering the uncritical acceptance of beliefs and misinformation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half of the Queensland teachers surveyed in 2020 by the Australian Education Union (AEU) reported seeing religious instruction providers try to convert children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the study revealed that 85 per cent of teachers thought that religious instruction should take place outside of the classroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/queensland-education\/schools-hub\/labor-mps-criticise-qld-religious-instruction-policy\/news-story\/cc1232c61609ae3f4d23243b420eb33c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citipointe video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sparked outrage from Labor MPs. Don Brown, the member for Capalaba, said: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a father of a son who just started Prep at a state school, this video sickened me to my core. A church bragging about harvesting our kids for their \u2018disciples\u2019 in our state schools.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/make-a-donation\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11873\" src=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1024x256.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1024x256.png 1024w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1536x384.png 1536w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Citipointe video was the catalyst for a motion by ALP members to move RI out of curriculum time. Our educators agree. The Queensland Teachers&#8217; Union and the Queensland Association of State School Principals also want RI taken out of curriculum time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evangelical religious lessons have always been contentious. A scathing<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brisbanetimes.com.au\/national\/queensland\/labor-urged-to-heed-joh-minister-s-advice-to-scrap-religious-instruction-20190625-p5216z.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1972 report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commissioned by education minister Sir Alan Fletcher branded RI &#8220;educationally unsound&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, we live in a diverse and pluralistic society where only 45 per cent of people identify as Christian and less than 15 per cent regularly attend church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RI is an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anachronism and a relic of a bygone age when we were universally Christian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enough of untrained adults preaching to children. Enough of the deceit in presenting beliefs as facts. Our kids deserve better.
