{"id":13174,"date":"2023-04-27T12:40:51","date_gmt":"2023-04-27T02:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/?p=13174"},"modified":"2023-04-27T12:51:54","modified_gmt":"2023-04-27T02:51:54","slug":"holding-the-line-on-religious-instruction-for-the-christian-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/27\/holding-the-line-on-religious-instruction-for-the-christian-right\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Holding the line\u2019 on Religious Instruction for the Christian Right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queensland\u2019s education minister Grace Grace faces a decision of either listening to her Labor colleagues and their call to remove Religious Instruction (RI) from school hours, or \u201cholding the line\u201d for the Christian Right in the Liberal-National opposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the public backlash in response to media reporting on how Christian missionaries view public schools as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/queensland-education\/religious-instruction-qld-brisbane-citipointe-church-west-discusses-harvesting-schools-for-disciples-in-leaked-video\/news-story\/bb9d940a0267e522b2f7a9653139f03f\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cmission fields\u201d and kids ripe for \u201charvesting\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one would think that removing the RI program from class time would be \u2018low-hanging fruit\u2019 for the Palaszczuk government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AlPIKiQSICE&amp;t=30s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I have previously argued on ABC Radio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the state government has, in recent years, introduced laws to decriminalise and improve access to abortion, and make voluntary assisted dying an option for terminally ill Queenslanders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In both instances, the Palaszczuk government comfortably handled the criticism from religious lobbyists to make those widely popular reforms. Although a number of state<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/queensland-education\/schools-hub\/labor-mps-criticise-qld-religious-instruction-policy\/news-story\/cc1232c61609ae3f4d23243b420eb33c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Labor members of parliament have now spoken out against RI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 with one, Don Brown, saying \u201ctime is up\u201d for RI in state schools \u2013 the government has given no sign that it is considering reform on RI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is no surprise that the voices calling for RI to stay in public schools are coming from the Christian Right within the Liberal National Party.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this month, Mark Robinson \u2013 a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brisbanetimes.com.au\/national\/queensland\/christianity-and-the-lnp-20120207-1r60g.html?fbclid=IwAR3DPkNq3Ad8sxguJmRJ_VHNh7HcQFAtPfbTdOG3OsMXrfobHGWyKHVtVkE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">member of the state parliament since 2009 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 used a speech to parliament to urge Minister Grace to \u201chold the line against the current attacks\u201d and \u201ckeep RI\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Robinson is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acnc.gov.au\/charity\/charities\/13f6872a-39af-e811-a962-000d3ad24a0d\/people\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a director <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rjJI_OBMLs8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an occasional preacher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at, the Pentecostal church known as Favor Church in Brisbane. The church\u2019s mission, according to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission website, is to \u201cpromote and foster the development of Christianity and the belief in our Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, he appeared as a guest speaker at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchandstate.com.au\/speakers-20\/?fbclid=IwAR36czRSu3_Gc6lxbOphhAGUC1C6wbhf_TGMRDrGKapZWawnzABWQsdkb5Q\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dominionist Church &amp; State Summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 an event that brings members of the Christian Right together to discuss <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/it-s-our-turn-inside-the-christian-right-conference-plotting-a-political-takeover-20210303-p577fv.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to infiltrate politics and parties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Just a few days ago, he<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joined Australian Christian Lobby spokesperson Wendy Francis at the anti-abortion rally in Brisbane. Later this year, he is scheduled to appear as a guest speaker at the Apostolic Summit entitled \u2018Roar Over Nations\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"9pti3fruHkTsGGdPmJ0TKzMECjfkgSbw1S5ZM85viX2orOh78l4JyWjPhCcYKaIqeQzFULwB1DRE2taLuXsOnlxADFVQvxpBY\"><iframe title=\"LNP politician Mark Robinson urges education minister to &quot;hold the line&quot; on Religious Instruction\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/029MYhdGh5c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Dr Robinson leading the push to retain RI in public schools, it is worth taking a closer inspection of the arguments he used in his speech to parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He opened by stating the importance of Easter to many Christians, adding a claim that God\u2019s message of \u201clove, acceptance and forgiveness\u201d is important to everyone \u2013 a typical statement for many practising Christians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps if he had left it there, I would have been able to suppress the urge to put figurative pen to paper in response to his speech. But he didn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Robinson went on to cite two articles and several well-worn talking points provided by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/documents.parliament.qld.gov.au\/tp\/2023\/5723T504-AB9D.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent media statement from the Multi-faiths RI group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which contain claims that cannot be left unchallenged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The articles Dr Robinson tabled with his speech purportedly showed that the program was \u201chelpful for school-age children to have the opportunity to be taught spirituality with a message of love and acceptance\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firstly, though \u2018love\u2019 and \u2018acceptance\u2019 are worthy ideals, these words do not appear in any of the three documents he cited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondly, and critically, \u2018spirituality\u2019 is emphatically not synonymous with \u2018religion\u2019. This constant and disingenuous equating of the two by those who argue for religious involvement in public schools via both the RI and the school chaplaincy program is so pervasive that one may be forgiven for thinking it is a tactic that features heavily in some kind of RI apologists\u2019 manual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both of the articles he tabled refer to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spirituality<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the form of meditation, as well as more traditional religious practices. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/documents.parliament.qld.gov.au\/tp\/2023\/5723T502-AAEA.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While one article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does look specifically at church attendance and prayer, as well as meditation, among children aged from 9-14 years, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/documents.parliament.qld.gov.au\/tp\/2023\/5723T503-3450.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other cited article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is related to the benefits of considering the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spiritual<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needs of patients in health-care settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latter even supplies a definition of \u2018spirituality\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that places religion firmly in the sub-category box. Notably, neither document refers to doctrinal faith lessons being provided in public schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undeterred, Dr Robinson segued smoothly to the content of the Multi-faiths RI media statement. It was there that solipsism truly took centre stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RI gives parents a choice of faith in their child\u2019s education, he proclaimed. This statement ignores the fact that parents can choose for their children to attend one of the countless places of worship <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available to all, not to mention the option of faith-based schooling for those who can afford it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right there are two options for imparting religious beliefs \u2013 both of them are heavily subsidised by the public purse \u2013 that do not impinge on the education of anyone else\u2019s child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13179\" src=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/RICartoon2-1024x704.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/RICartoon2-1024x704.png 1024w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/RICartoon2-300x206.png 300w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/RICartoon2-768x528.png 768w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/RICartoon2.png 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The claim ignores the fact that in Queensland principals have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> choice to say \u2018no\u2019 to RI interrupting the school day. Similarly, nor do teachers have the choice to say \u2018no\u2019 to handing over their classroom to missionaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The claim also disregards the fact that non-participating students have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> choice to continue with curriculum learning while RI takes place for those whose parents have given them permission to take part.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this casts into doubt the very rubbery numbers declared as evidence of the supposed popularity of RI \u2013 a fragile fa\u00e7ade that would instantly crumble without the protective policy, legal layers and lack of real choices that see RI without any kind of competition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RI providers are keenly aware of this and are fearful of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/victoria\/religion-class-enrolments-slump-in-state-schools-in-decade-since-program-changes-20230221-p5cm6u.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repeat of what happened in Victoria,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where faith lessons were moved outside class time and where \u2018choice\u2019 truly became a thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most disingenuous aspect of the \u2018choice\u2019 argument is the implication that there is a veritable smorgasbord of faiths from which to choose, apparently catering to the rich diversity in Queensland state schools. This is pure theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian RI dominates, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brisbanetimes.com.au\/national\/queensland\/union-wants-church-taught-gospel-gone-from-queensland-classes-20190701-p522x0.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">representing over 95 per cent of RI classes that are available<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handful of minority faiths make up the remainder and are present in a tiny number of schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extraordinarily, Dr Robinson touted RI as supporting multiculturalism in our multi-faith society and as contributing to social cohesion. This has been partially refuted with the above elucidation about the reality of RI offerings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if RI were available in every religion imaginable, the question remains as to how our multicultural society is going to be enhanced by segregating young children in state schools to impart mutually exclusive religious doctrine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brisbanetimes.com.au\/politics\/queensland\/unesco-scientist-calls-for-review-of-religious-instruction-in-schools-20191010-p52zji.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows worldviews education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is provided by qualified teachers engenders understanding and tolerance, and equips all students with at least some knowledge of minority faiths \u2013 communities that are all too often subjected to ignorant stereotyping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/media-centre\/media-releases\/2021-census-shows-changes-australias-religious-diversity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ever-increasing number of the non-religious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Do they have no culture to speak of? Nothing to contribute to the rich fabric of our society? A whole demographic is unequivocally excluded from any consideration whatsoever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his speech, Dr Robinson rattled off other rhetorically appealing points of RI. He said the program supported values that were embedded in the curriculum, provided a well-rounded education and produced psychological benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rationalist.com.au\/make-a-donation\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11873\" src=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1024x256.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1024x256.png 1024w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation-1536x384.png 1536w, https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Rationale-donation.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems Dr Robinson is perfectly happy for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students attending RI to have these supposed benefits. Values are modelled by qualified teachers to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students in classrooms every day. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students deserve a holistic, well-rounded education from their time in public schools, regardless of religious persuasion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, activities with psychological benefits should be in a form accessible to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The selectiveness, sense of entitlement and callous disregard for the non-religious cohort by RI proponents provide powerful reasons against continuing to privilege religious groups with access to public school classrooms \u2013 a privilege they have enjoyed in Queensland for well over a century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The choice for Minister Grace is clear. Instead of siding with the Religious Right in the Liberal National Party, she should listen to her Labor colleagues and the Queensland public on RI.
