Matt Bissett-Johnson, cartoonist for <\/span>Rationale<\/span><\/i>, has received national recognition, with three of his <\/span>Rationale <\/span><\/i>works featured in the new book <\/span>Best Australian Political Cartoons 2022<\/span><\/i>, published last month.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Melbourne-based cartoonist, known as \u2018MBJ\u2019, said he was \u201cchuffed\u201d to have his work again included in the book, having had one or two pieces featured almost every year since 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n

The cartoons featured in the 2022 version include: one on the theme of the media\u2019s <\/span>targeting of Anthony Albanese with \u2018gotcha\u2019 questions<\/span><\/a>, published in <\/span>Rationale<\/span><\/i> during the federal election in May; one featuring <\/span>Daleks talking about discrimination<\/span><\/a>, published during the debate over the Religious Discrimination Bill in late January; and one on the theme of <\/span>COVID graves<\/span><\/a>, published in February.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very happy. It’s a great book, and I’m very chuffed to have some favourite cartoons of mine included in such a fascinating collection,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOf these three cartoons, my favourite is the one about Albo \u2018gotcha\u2019 questions. It’s a funny gag, I reckon, and gets to the point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe book shines a spotlight on all the great cartoonists in this country, and we should celebrate the artform that is often the first thing under threat in many publications.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Bissett-Johnson has loved drawing since he was young, describing himself as \u201cthe one who could draw\u201d in primary school.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI got a lot of encouragement from my late mother, who was a fine artist, painter and printmaker.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While studying sculpture in the 1990s, he had many comics published in the RMIT <\/span>Catalyst Magazine<\/span><\/i>. He has also worked in animation for ABC television shows <\/span>Li’l Elvis and the Truckstoppers<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Recovery<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>BackBerner<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bissett-Johnson has contributed to <\/span>Rationale<\/span><\/i> magazine and its predecessor, <\/span>Australian Rationalist<\/span><\/i>, for about four years.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also contributes regular cartoons to the small publication <\/span>Melbourne Observer<\/span><\/i> and creates comedic computer animations in both 2D and 3D.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has won a number of awards in recent years, including three Stanley Awards from the Australian Cartoonists Association (2015, 2018 and 2020)<\/span><\/p>\n
