{"id":11262,"date":"2022-02-22T18:03:26","date_gmt":"2022-02-22T07:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/?p=11262"},"modified":"2022-07-22T00:35:36","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T14:35:36","slug":"mandatory-consent-education-is-a-huge-win-for-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rationalemagazine.com\/index.php\/2022\/02\/22\/mandatory-consent-education-is-a-huge-win-for-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Mandatory consent education is a huge win for Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One year after activist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CaDsMFLBhBA\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chanel Contos\u2019 Instagram poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed more than 6,700 testimonies of sexual assault \u2013 often at high school parties \u2013 education ministers around Australia have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/the-feed\/consent-education-will-be-mandatory-across-australian-schools-from-next-year\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unanimously agreed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mandate consent education in schools from 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All Australian schools will be required to teach age-appropriate consent education \u2013 which includes coercion, gendered stereotypes and power imbalances \u2013 from foundation to year 10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, one in five women in Australia has<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ourwatch.org.au\/quick-facts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experienced some form of sexual violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with one in four of these being under 18 at the time. Evidence shows <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aifs.gov.au\/publications\/what-effective-primary-prevention-sexual-assault\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preventive education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/injury\/features\/sexual-violence\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">information on consent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a powerful tool in reducing sexual assault.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, a commitment to mandatory consent education is worth celebrating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the details around what schools can teach, what teachers are willing to teach, and what parents are willing to accept, are complex. And an exclusive focus on safety may come at the cost of the enjoyable benefits of human connection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Young people say consent education now is \u2018atrocious\u2019<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecu.edu.au\/schools\/arts-and-humanities\/research-and-creative-activity\/communication-media-and-cultural-studies\/adolescents-perceptions-of-harm-from-accessing-online-content\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ongoing project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we asked teenagers and their parents <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/1369118X.2021.1988130?scroll=top&amp;needAccess=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about their perceptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of school-based sex education, their experiences of online and offline harm, and online pornography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adolescents as young as 11 shared personal stories of harmful behaviour, including breaches of consent online, such as receiving unsolicited sexual images, and people re-sharing nude pictures meant for private viewing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The teenagers who said they\u2019d received consent education felt they hadn\u2019t been given the tools required to instigate or navigate a conversation about consent \u2013 nor had they been helped around how to communicate a firm, but respectful \u201cno\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One teenager said: \u201cThe education system needs to catch up, it is light years behind \u2026 because to be quite frankly honest, the education we receive (in this area) is atrocious.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One teen told us about when a friend and his girlfriend\u2019s loving relationship became sexual: \u201c\u2026 It wasn\u2019t that it was non-consensual and that she didn\u2019t want it but it wasn\u2019t 100% \u2026 but now because there was a minor little check that hasn\u2019t happened, his life\u2019s been completely thrown in the gutter \u2026 part of the system failed because she didn\u2019t know how (to communicate a lack of consent) and he didn\u2019t know how to (obtain consent) properly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This highlights the fact consent is often a blurry, difficult concept that needs clarification. It illustrates that consent can be revoked at anytime. Another teenager said: \u201c(we\u2019ve) only been taught \u2018make sure there\u2019s consent\u2019, not how to check if there actually is consent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>It\u2019s also often fear-based<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teens in our study have said the fear-based approach to sex education means they are less likely to share their experiences with their parents and caregivers for fear of being punished. Although, we also found teenagers are generally reluctant, embarrassed or otherwise unreceptive to talking about sex with their parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research also shows the \u201cjust don\u2019t do it\u201d approach is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealth.columbia.edu\/public-health-now\/news\/abstinence-only-education-failure?fbclid=IwAR3VtGwhzBuvAPQdCm9zGwLOVFpM8atKtubeoDUAwvxDfcgtZbXht82HXwU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">akin to abstinence education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It increases the risks of teenagers looking to porn for information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such an approach overlooks the positives of expressing intimacy in safe spaces and denies young people\u2019s real-world experiences of enjoyable, safe sexual behaviour both online and offline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given most parents did not receive consent education themselves, and many experience generational sexual shame that reflects traditional, cultural and religious beliefs, we expected many parents to be resistant to some parts of sexuality education, such as teaching about positive sexual experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But most of the parents we spoke to supported better sex, relationships and consent education at schools. Many also felt they didn\u2019t have the skills to delve into the nuances of consent and relied on schools to supply that information.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u2018Consent\u2019 is just the start of good consent education<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What constitutes comprehensive relationships and sexuality education has been discussed for many years, but includes consent education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts agree consent education includes more than simply discussions around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/not-as-simple-as-no-means-no-what-young-people-need-to-know-about-consent-155736\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cno means no\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The conversation should include how to maintain and respect boundaries, managing rejection, and balancing giving consent with aspects of pleasure and desire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too great a focus on consent, using a fear-based sex-negative approach (think of phrases like, \u201cAre you sure?\u201d \u201cAre you absolutely certain?\u201d) fails to acknowledge and respect the positive and pleasurable aspects of intimate human relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clunky approaches to these topics can mean romance, consensual seduction, courtship and trust may suffer, and teenagers will tune out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consent education only starts with \u201cconsent\u201d. There\u2019s a bigger picture involving <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/1369118X.2021.1988130?scroll=top&amp;needAccess=true&amp;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex-positive concepts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as practising empathy, building healthy relationships, communication skills, discussing sex outside the notions of reproduction and managing emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many said quality sex education depends on the teacher. But the schools that offer consent education generally have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/teachers-training-discuss-consent-rape-101150183.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no mandatory training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for those who teach it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Making sure important parts of sex ed aren\u2019t skipped over<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a public consultation period in 2021, the Australian Curriculum Assessment <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acara.edu.au\/curriculum\/curriculum-review\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviewed the Australian curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, judging it to be overcrowded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given this, all the trickier aspects of relationships and sexuality education are more likely to be skipped over or omitted. This is more likely if a teacher feels uncomfortable, rushed, or lacking in appropriate skills and knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any curriculum change should be accompanied by an auditing process. Consent education should balance the safety perspective with the positive and realistic aspects of relationships and sex and be included in the curriculum up to year 12. This ideally would include government mandated support and training for teachers, based in sex-positivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to consider that education around consent, relationships and sexuality doesn\u2019t end at school. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/netflixs-sex-education-is-doing-sex-education-better-than-most-schools-170776\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There still need to be conversations at home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where individual family beliefs and values can be discussed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mandatory consent education in Australia is a huge win.
